Tony studied horticulture at Levels 2 and 3 at Capel Manor College. He is now a retired science teacher and published horticultural book author.

“I had heard of Capel Manor College as they were well known in London, Hertfordshire and Essex for those that are interested in gardening and horticulture and wanted to study for a qualification. I chose the College because of its very good reputation and the wide range of courses on offer.

I studied horticulture at Levels 2 and 3 whilst working part-time as a science teacher in Hertfordshire as well as Harlow and was looking after my family. I was at the College for three to four years. I had always known what I wanted to study. As a science teacher, I noticed that the curriculum was very limited in garden plant science which was disappointing to me and my students. I decided to enrol on a course at Capel Manor College to boost my own knowledge of gardening and horticulture. I have always had an insatiable interest in horticultural science from when I studied Polymer Tech and Science at the Institute of Polymer Science.

I thought the courses I chose were excellent and the lecturers taught us to a high standard. I enjoyed the practical sessions and the quality of fieldwork. I gained strong academic and practical confidence in gardening and horticulture. Students were like-minded and the lecturers were friendly but professional and above all, cheerful.

I am now a garden science book author, speaker, web site disabled audio broadcaster, garden writer and a retired Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture. I am now aiming to get my book, ‘Science for the Gardener’, to ordinary gardening students worldwide. Capel Manor College helped me further my knowledge and motivated me to get to where I am today. The College was central in helping me get into the horticultural industry , and gave me 100% confidence in basic gardening and horticulture. I continue to give garden talks and have also designed a popular 55 slide PowerPoint talk I would not have achieved what I have professionally without the three years of studying I did. In my humble opinion, Capel Manor College could well be part of a university with its quality and standard of teaching.”
